I titled my review of Star Trek Discovery as "Valid complains Invalid Trashing"
YES, everyone especially Burnam is emotional. Yes it's different more visual and at least at the beginning, grittier and harsher than most Star Treks. Now season 4 and 5 do abjectly suck I wholeheartedly agree. But season 3 was actually pretty decent. And no matter how the plot arc of the burn ended, the journey everyone took trying to figure out what happened and find themselves/thier place in the future was Absolutely worth watching. Also the main character is annoying as anything. But that's why it's such a good idea to have so many supporting characters with thier own lives, storylines, discoveries to be made and journey's that they're on. I don't think Michael Burnam could even actually be called THE main character in the first place. The main characters are Commander/Captain Saru, Lt. Stanments, and for the first two seasons Lorca, Captain Pike and Ash Tyler. Interest dropped off in season 3 only because the most compelling characters were gone. Not because the show suddenly got boring, predictable or childish as far as plot.
Well that happened the next season. I tried watching season 4 and turned it off after 2 episodes. But season 3 I will absolutely die on thier proverbial hill did NOT deserve the hate that it gets drowned in. Mirror Saru was AWESOME to see. And Mirror Georgiou, who is the Georgiou we come to know and it is her journey we see, has a pretty impressive storyline. And a decent send-off. Terra Firma.
My review for people who know what I look for and who understand that I'm a little more invested in what I watch... A review I would try to give people at social gatherings who asked me what I thought about Discovery and knew I was a Star Trek FANATIC to begin with... would hear something like this:
Star Trek but for NON-fans
This is Star Trek but feels like most other modern science fiction shows. And I am using that as an observation and a compliment. If you like modern science fiction, this will feel very comfortable for you. And a lot less like traditional star trek. Which is of course why die-hard star trek fans hate it and why anyone who doesn't' like Star trek to begin with holds it up for the world to see how awful Star Trek is.
Rain Robinson of season 3 Voyager once described them as a motely crew, and these guys actually are. Widely different from each-other, more different species and newer ones, more like Farscape or Babylon 5. And starting in season 3 it begins to feel like any cult sci-fi series where 'New Earth' is a thing, especially Millennium and the one that takes place in what used to be St. Louis.
The slow beginning of season 3 and the ridiculousness of the explanation they finally came up with for The Burn are perfectly valid points. But the season as a whole was pretty decent. Georgiou said goodbye and Michael found a piece of her history *talking about seeing Spock work for Unification* I personally don't think the show self-destructed until the first few minutes of season 4. And it imploded in the most...well season 4 onward was a caricature of the show.
